Creating Chapter Markers

When you watch a feature movie on DVD, you usually have the option of skipping to specific scenes, or chapters. If you're going to export your movie to iDVD, you can set up chapter markers in iMovie that iDVD imports as chapters, saving you time when you build your DVD project.

To create a chapter marker:

  1. Place the Playhead at the point that you'd like to set as a marker.

  2. Switch to iMovie's iDVD pane.

  3. Click the Add Chapter button; a thumbnail of the current frame appears in the iDVD Chapter Markers list (Figure 16.1), and a yellow diamond appears in the Timeline Viewer (Figure 16.2).

Figure 16.1. Click the Add Chapter button to create a new iDVD chapter marker.

  4. iMovie inserts the name of the current clip as the chapter name. If you want to call it something else, type a new name into the highlighted field.

  • With a chapter highlighted in the iDVD pane, hit Return, Enter, or Tab to select the next chapter in the list.

  • You can't move a chapter marker to a new time location. Instead, simply create a new marker at the new location and delete the old marker.

  • Highlighting chapters in the iDVD pane is a fast way to reposition the Playhead in long movie projects.
