Chapter  8.   Managing the Servers

To summarize this chapter, we discussed the common server management tasks , most of which are covered in great detail in other chapters. In this chapter we discussed various methods of configuring SharePoint Portal Server with Microsoft Proxy Server, and we discussed the overall benefits of a proxy server within our environment. We discussed the Load Tab and how to configure site hit frequency rules. We looked at how we can balance the Search and Index resource usage load across our SharePoint Portal Servers. And we described how to adjust the Search resource usage and Indexing research usage bars in a manner that dedicated resources to the process accordingly , or allowed a single server to balance these settings on the same server.

We also discussed the importance of specifying the gatherer email address, so other site administrators can contact an individual if they experience any problems with our crawling process as it impacts their site. Use of access and propagation accounts were covered, and details were provided for how to change the location of server data and log files. We provided a high-level overview around crawling public folders on Exchange 5.5 servers, plus the information required in order to set up the crawl process. And we looked at Exchange Server security concerns that need to be addressed. Additionally, we talked about enabling Web discussions on the SPS server, and how this can limit discussions to within the workspace. We also provided a high-level overview regarding configuring the protocol handler and running the Lotus Notes Index Setup Wizard.

Lastly, we discussed several advanced processes and procedures, like starting and stopping services, configuring IFilters to allow custom files types to be recognized, using Robots.txt files to restrict Web crawlers to designated areas of a particular site, installing Help Files associated with Outlook Web Access, and using ESEUTIL.EXE to reclaim disk space associated with the defrag process.

In the next chapter, we address management of SharePoint Portal Server at a more granular level, and focus on managing the SPS workspace.
