Exchange Server Unavailable for Ten Minutes

I have set my Exchange time-out but I'm still unable to index.

A1:

If 32 time-outs are received from a specific Exchange server being crawled during Index creation, SharePoint Portal Server logically blocks out the server as unavailable for additional requests for 10 minutes. This may be caused by the Exchange server simply being unavailable or down for maintenance. On the other hand, though, it may simply speak to the need to increase the time-out value to a greater number. Microsoft recommends 120 seconds as an excellent starting point in this case.

No SPS User Access While WSS Reclaim Is in Progress

I need a tool that reports the time it takes to access a document stored in SharePoint Portal Server.

A1:

The amount of time that the WSS disk space reclaim process will take will vary depending on the size of the database. However, it should be noted that your SPS server is simply not available to your end-user community while this process is running. This is because the WSS file system must be locked to perform the reclaim. It is recommended therefore that the process be scheduled during a non-peak window, or within a scheduled downtime period, according to your planned maintenance processes and procedures.

Access Time to a Document Is Long

My users are telling me that they can't access the system and the WSS reclaim process is executing. What should I do?

A1:

In some cases, you may notice that the access time it takes to access a document stored in SPS is much longer than usual. To verify how the load of the server is affecting its overall performance, use the RTF IFilter tool. This tool provides for a simple test to verify that the SharePoint Portal Server computer is functioning normally, and the output created by the test is reported to assist in diagnosing the problem. You may obtain this tool under the \Tools\server_latency directory, on the SPS Resource Kit CD (or available at no charge on Microsoft's Web site) .
