In this chapter, you looked at how to create and implement a database maintenance strategy for database servers. You concentrated on the core maintenance tasks that should be performed on every database server-database consistency checks, the rebuilding of indexes, and other optional tasks.
You looked in detail at the DBCCs to understand what they do and how they should be used. You also looked at index fragmentation and what options you have to rebuild indexes.
You then examined the various tools that a DBA can take advantage of to manage multiple instance of SQL Server 2005 in the enterprise.
You looked at how you can design a database maintenance plan and the importance of creating a job dependency diagram. We discussed the Database Maintenance Plan Wizard as a tool to implement “simpler” database maintenance plans.
Finally, we discussed designing a strategy of maintaining your SSRS environment and discussed various issues with managing your SSRS Servers, their configuration, and databases.
