We would like to pretend that we know all there is to know about Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and that, therefore, we could have written every word of this book without a bit of help. But even if there were time enough, the range of subjects and the degree of expertise necessary to do justice to this complex product meant that we needed to bring in some true experts and specialists.

Tom Fronckowiak (LJL Enterprises) contributed two of the chapters on security. His insights and experience were invaluable in helping explain both the concepts and implementation of protective measures in Windows 2000.

L. J. Locher was our expert on performance monitoring and tuning. She wrote about the subject in depth and with admirable clarity.

Mitch Tulloch (MTIT Enterprises, http://www.mtit.com ) is the expert s expert on Internet services, and we greatly appreciate his professionalism as well as his technical skills.

Paul E.Robichaux (Robichaux & Associates, Inc.) is the computer world s Renaissance man. He is an expert on more subjects than seems fair to the rest of us. In this book, he contributed chapters on Macintosh services, Certificate Services, and managing the registry—subjects that are, for all intents and purposes, totally unrelated—yet he wrote masterfully about all three.

Craig Zacker made enormously valuable contributions on the subjects of Active Directory and Backup. Particularly in the area of Active Directory, his knowledge is unparalleled.

Mickey Souza, whose skill and good humor are exceeded only by her modesty, was our source for information on third-party backup systems.

The companion CD-ROM was organized and designed by Dianne Blake (http:// www.members.home.net/write-it), who labored long to gather all the software and tips. Our aim was to have a CD that was truly useful and that added real value to the book. We think Dianne met and exceeded that goal.

All these contributors performed well beyond our expectations and made the long process of putting together a very large book much less difficult.

Special Contributor

In the early phases of this project, we wanted to hire someone with basic Windows skills to help us write two or three chapters. An old friend, Stephen Nelson, author of many books, recommended a young and talented newcomer, Jason Gerend.

Jason turned out to be a pearl beyond price—a treasure, in fact. This book would have been much the poorer without his contributions. He didn t just write chapters, he took ownership of them. He made suggestions, pointed out omissions, and did a great deal of research around questions that weren t even his direct responsibility. In addition to being smart, hardworking, and a bundle of energy and initiative, Jason is a splendid human being whom we d be glad to know, even if he hadn t been such a great collaborator. We ve never worked with anyone better—or more fun. We were lucky and delighted to have him as a member of the team.
