Recovering Songs from CD

 <  Day Day Up  >

The steps in recovering a song from CD are similar to the steps for performing a backup. Press the SONG Edit Condition button multiple times until you see SNG CD-R Recover, and then press YES. The VS will now display all the songs contained on the backup. Now you can choose which song to recover by using the jogwheel. If you want to recover all songs, turn the jogwheel counterclockwise until you see CDR Rcv=All Song xxx, where xxx represents the total number of songs in the current partition.

At this point, if you press the YES button, the recover process will begin. However, if you press the parameter button after selecting the song to recover, you can select the read speed. The maximum read speed is determined by the burner, and the VS will allow you to select all available read speeds that are supported by your burner. Set this value to the maximum speed allowed by your burner . After you have selected the read speed, press YES.

If you chose to recover a single song, the VS will now begin the recover process. However, if you chose to recover all songs, you will be prompted with INIT IDE.n OK ?, where n is the currently selected partition. If you press YES, all songs on that particular partition are erased, and then all songs from the CD are recovered to the partition. The manual incorrectly states that all songs on the entire hard drive will be erased. The truth is that only the songs on the currently selected partition will be erased.

Better Safe than Sorry

If you have a copy of your owners manual, you'll understand when I say that there are some problems with it. One of the biggest issues involves the Drive Initialization process. Let me try to set the record straight.

If you go to SYSTEM SYS DriveInitialize, the VS will ask which partition to initialize. Regardless of which partition you choose, the entire hard drive will be re- initialized . All data on all partitions of the hard drive will be lost.

If you are recovering songs from a backup CD, and you choose to recover all songs on the CD, the VS will ask if you want to re-initialize the current partition. In this case, only the currently selected partition will be re-initialized, not the entire drive. Saying YES to this particular function only erases the songs on the currently selected drive and does not do anything to songs on any other partitions.

In the manual, the section on recovery states that all songs on all partitions will be erased. In my testing, I found this to be incorrect. I have tested recovering songs to the internal hard drive as well as to external SCSI hard drives . My tests were done with a VS-880EX running version 2.014 of the operating system. Whether you are running the DriveInitialize function or you are recovering songs from a CD, make sure you have a backup of all your data. The only thing worse than accidentally wiping out your hard drive is not having a backup when you do.
