Summary

Team Foundation Server is the core set of application and data tier components that enable collaboration within team projects. In this chapter, we reviewed the system architecture of the data tier and application tier of the Team Foundation Server. We also discussed how security is handled within a TFS deployment.

We covered how project managers interact with a Team Foundation Server and tools such as Team Explorer to create new team projects, manage process templates, assign team members to a project, and maintain the project portal site. For project contributors, you learned how to effectively work as part of a team and use the various TFS features to participate within the overall project process by using the Team Explorer, the project portal, and even Microsoft Office.

In the following chapters, you will build on this knowledge by digging deeper into the process for managing work items, working with the TFS source control system, and managing builds. You will also examine how architects and developers can use the VSTS modeling features and how testers can use Visual Studio Team Test to conduct unit and load testing and manage test cases.
