Other Novell Clients

In addition to the traditional Novell client, there are three other clients compatible with OES Linux. They are as follows:

  • NICI client

  • NMAS client

  • NetDrive client

In addition to these three feature-specific clients, there are a few others that are installed automatically with their respective product software. Each of these clients will be discussed as part of its product overview in other chapters throughout this book.

NICI Client

The Novell International Cryptographic Infrastructure (NICI) is the modular foundation for all crypto-services offered in Novell products and services. NICI client provides cryptographic services to client-side applications and services. NICI client has received FIPS 140-1 (Level 1) certification, which is as good as it gets for client-based cryptographic services.

The NICI client is included with the Novell Client download, available from http://download.novell.com. In an OES NetWare environment, the NICI client is required for several components, including Deployment Manager, Novell Nsure Audit, and Native File Access. With OES Linux, the only components that require the NICI client are the Novell Modular Authentication Service and ConsoleOne (when downloaded and installed on a local Windows workstation).

The NICI client is installed automatically as part of the Novell Client installation process, discussed earlier. It can also be installed separately by completing the following steps:

1.

Locate the \nici folder created when the Novell Client files are extracted from the ZIP file downloaded from http://download.novell.com. For example, for Novell client for Windows XP/2000, the NICI folder is located in \WINNT\i386\.

2.

Launch WCNICIU0.EXE from the \nici folder.

3.

At the NICI client Welcome screen, click Next.

4.

At the License Agreement screen, click Yes.

5.

At the Setup Complete screen, click Finish.

This completes the installation of the NICI client.

NMAS Client

Novell Modular Authentication Services (NMAS) allow you to supplement or replace the traditional Novell password authentication mechanism with alternative mechanisms such as SmartCards, tokens, and biometrics. OES Linux includes the NMAS Starter Pack, which offers two alternative authentication methods. NMAS Enterprise Edition, which is sold as an add-on product, adds support for many third-party authentication methods, multifactor authentication, and graded authentication.

The NMAS client provides a framework within which authentication methods can be configured and integrated with Novell eDirectory to provide a flexible and seamless authentication process. For more information on NMAS, see Chapter 8.

To install the NMAS client, complete the following steps:

1.

The latest version of the Novell client and the NICI client are required for installation of the NMAS client. Make sure they are installed prior to installing the NMAS client.

2.

Locate the \nmasclient folder created when the Novell Client files are extracted from the ZIP file downloaded from http://download.novell.com. For example, for Novell client for Windows XP/2000, the NICI folder is located in \WINNT\i386\.

3.

Launch CLIENTSETUP.EXE from the \nmasclient folder.

4.

At the NMAS Client Welcome screen, click Next. The installation routine will review the versions of the Novell client and NICI client to make sure that all prerequisites have been met.

5.

At the License Agreement screen, click Yes.

6.

At the Setup Complete screen, click Finish.

7.

Click OK to finish the installation. Note that you will have to restart the workstation for the NMAS client installation to be complete.

When the workstation reboots, you will see the new NMAS login screen. For more information on configuring and using NMAS login methods, see Chapter 8.

NetDrive Client

Novell NetDrive lets you map a drive to any server without using the traditional Novell client. This means that with NetDrive, you can access your files on any server and modify them through standard Windows utilities such as Windows Explorer. For more information on using NetDrive, see Chapter 12, "OES Linux File Access."

The NetDrive client is available online at http://support.novell.com/filefinder. The current version as of this writing is NDRV41862.EXE. To install the NetDrive client, complete the following steps:

1.

Create a folder off the root of your C:\drive for the NetDrive client files and download NDRV41862.EXE into the newly created folder.

2.

Launch NDRV41862.EXE to extract the NetDrive installation files to the folder you created in step 1.

3.

Launch NDINT.EXE to install the NetDrive client.

4.

Select the language for the client installation and click OK.

5.

At the Welcome screen, click Next.

6.

At the License Agreement screen, click Yes.

7.

At the Destination Location screen, browse to the location where the NetDrive client should be installed and click Next.

When all files have copied, the installation of the NetDrive client is complete. With NetDrive installed, you can then easily access your OES server resources through mapped drives using any standard internet connection. For more information, see Chapter 12.
