World Induction Techniques Commonly Used in Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs Sometimes Called MMOs)

MMOGs (sometimes called MMOs or persistent world games, among other names) often use a number of the techniques mentioned in this chapter to create World Induction. However, they also use a number of distinct techniques of their own. A few of these are (depending on the game):

  • Becoming an insider. Some MMOGs take a while to get the hang of. Once you've learned the ropes, you're no longer a newbie you're an insider. The enjoyment of being a knowledgeable member of the group is an incentive to spend time in the game's world.

  • Participation in social networks. Some of these networks are long-lasting (existing over time); other social networks are formed with each new game experience, involving people you just met and with whom you go on adventures and quests. Players often have friends with whom they play online.

  • Building up a character over time. Once you've invested a lot of time earning and enhancing your character's abilities, you want to enjoy the fruits of your efforts.

  • Being part of a social meta-group revolving around the game. A meta-group is a group that discusses the group game experience. This means, when you're not playing the game, there are websites through which you can communicate about the game with other people who often play it.

  • Admiration from and status in the eyes of other game players. This can occur during gameplay, generated by the power commanded by your character. It can also occur through meta-group communications, where the status or admiration comes as a result of your rank or your reputation in the game, or your providing a service to the group. Examples of such services can be disseminating inside information about the game to which you might have access, or creating assets that other players can use.

  • The unpredictability of playing with or against other people in real time. Some people enjoy playing first-person shooters or real-time strategy games online for just this reason.
