DECnet Proxies

Many OpenVMS users have accounts on several systems or must routinely access the files belonging to a particular account on a remote node. DECnet proxy access relieves you of the need to supply a username and password for each file access.

With proxy access, your system manager sets up a relationship between your local account and a given account on the remote system. When you access files on the remote system, you may omit the username and password.

While the network connection is being established, the remote system automatically recognizes that your username has a proxy relationship with an account on that node. File accesses are carried out using the remote account.

The preceding examples become much simpler when your local account has proxy access to user SMITH on node TAMPA:

     $ DIR TAMPA::     $ EDIT TAMPA::LOGIN.COM     $ COPY TAMPA::*.TXT []*.*     $ DELETE TAMPA::JUNK.DAT;*

Even when your account has proxy access to a given node and account, you may still use another remote identity by specifying a valid username and password.

Your system manager will configure any appropriate proxies for you.
