How Network Address Translation Works

Computers and devices on the Internet need to have a unique IP address to perform simple tasks such as browsing the Web. But the Internet has grown so substantially since it was invented, that there are not enough IP addresses to go around. To solve the problem, Network Address Translation (NAT) is used, which also has the added benefit of protecting PCs inside a network. In a home network, NAT is performed by a home router.
