Hainan is an island province situated in the southernmost part of China. It is located 18 nautical-miles off Guangdong's Leizhou Peninsula in southern China. Hainan province is composed of the Hainan Island, Xisha Islands, Nansha Islands and Zhongsha Islands. Hainan Island is the second largest island in China, after Taiwan Island. It is an arch, high in the middle and low all around. Mountains account for 25.4 per cent, hills 13.3 per cent, tableland 32.6 per cent and plains 28.7 per cent. The province has a total area of over 33,920 square kilometres with a population of 7.9555 million. The island has a total of 1,528 kilometres of coastline. The provincial capital is Haikou.
