The island is rich in natural resources. Its inland and offshore deposits of oil and natural gas rank are among the largest in China. Hainan has potential gas reserves of 5.8 trillion cubic metres and oil reserves of 29.1 billion tons in the main basins of the sea including the Yingge Sea and Beibu Bay. There are six oil and gas fields in operation, including Yacheng 13 “1, Dongfang 1 “1, Ledong 22 “1 and Ledong 15 “1. Since the beginning of 1996, Hainan has provided gas to Hong Kong through a 770-kilometre pipeline, annually supplying 2.9 billion cubic metres. Deposits of some 50 minerals have been discovered and more than 200 ore deposits have been found, including iron, copper , cobalt, lead, zinc, tungsten, tin, cement limestone, barite and lignite. Its reserves of titanium amount to about 70 per cent of the national total. Hainan island has rich aquatic resources, with 800 types of fish and 25,000 hectares of shallow water suited to raising fish.
