The eDirectory Can Be Installed on Many Different Operating Systems

Another feature of the eDirectory (which was also available during the past few versions) is that the eDirectory can be installed on more than one operating system. You don't have to use a Novell-only network in order to use the eDirectory. Instead, you can install the eDirectory on the following platforms:

  • Windows NT 4.0

  • Windows 2000

  • Windows Server 2003

  • Solaris Unix

  • AIX Unix

  • Linux

Compared to the Active Directory, that's quite a lot of options for a network administrator. Because you can also use products that can be used to coordinate information between different directories ( metadirectories ), you can use the eDirectory in the same network in which you use the Active Directory. Both of these platforms also have software and migration tools that enable you to interoperate , or migrate from one to another. Thus, you can use more than one directory in the same network, or you can migrate one to another, if you are changing your network to a single operating-system platform, for example.

You can read more about migrating from one directory to another, or about using both directories in the same network, in Part XI.
