Basics of the eDirectory

In Chapter 33, "Overview of the Novell Bindery and Novell Directory Services," you learned a great deal about managing Novell Directory Services. However, with the release of NetWare 6, there have been changes to the eDirectory. The name itself should tell you that NDS is now considered to be an "enterprise" solution to directory services. These are the main differences between NDS and the eDirectory:

  • Additional interface applications you can use to manage the eDirectory.

  • New applications that make use of the eDirectory.

  • A new backup utility, support for SNMP, and TLS/SSL, among others.

  • Support for additional operating systems, as described in the next section.

The eDirectory has been ported to various operating systems. Contrast this with the Active Directory, which now runs only on Windows server platforms.
