Overview

After completing this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Explore a SQL Server Integration Services project in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio.

  • Use the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to create a new Integration Services package.

  • Review package elements created by the SSIS Import and Export Wizard.

  • Execute a package and view the results.

In this chapter, you'll take a first look at the design environment used to create and manage Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages. The tools are significantly different than the design environment for SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services, with many improvements.

You will learn to use SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) to create and manage solutions, projects, and SSIS packages. Beginning with using the Import and Export Wizard to create an SSIS package, you will then add it to a BIDS SSIS project. You will look at the objects and elements within the package, which you will learn about in greater detail in Chapter 3, "Extracting and Loading Data."

You'll also learn about several options for executing a package in the design and production environments. Finally, you will view the results of your package execution, which will export data from tables in one database to tables in a new database.
