1.5 Summary of chapters

1.5 Summary of chapters

This book is concerned with CMOS integrated circuits, systems and transceivers for wireless and mobile communications. It contains ten chapters and covers all the key challenging topics highlighted in Section 1.4. The material and chapters in the book are organised around three parts: transceiver architecture and system level issues, constituent components and subsystems, and RF optimisation and testing, as already mentioned in Section 1.4. Transceiver architecture and system level design are first dealt with in Chapter 2, with a novel receiver architecture being detailed. In Chapters 3–8, the building blocks and subsystems in transceivers are then discussed in order from analogue baseband to RF frontend. In more detail, Chapters 3 and 4 are concerned with reconfigurable and programmable analogue baseband arrays, with Chapter 3 giving a digitally controlled analogue baseband chain and Chapter 4 dealing with general programmable analogue array. Design and on-chip tuning of active IC filters are then introduced in Chapters 5 and 6, with Chapter 5 presenting a detailed design of a polyphase channel filter for a low-IF stage and Chapter 6 giving a more general coverage of filter design and tuning techniques for applications up to RF. Further in this part, Chapter 7 addresses the receiver RF frontend modules (LNA, VCO, mixer) and chips, and Chapter 8 provides a tutorial on transmit RF power amplifiers. Chapters 9 and 10 form the third part of the book, dealing with parasiticaware RF design and optimisation (with power amplifier design examples), and onchip testing of communication ICs, respectively.
