Finally, for the benefit of those who use their computers for diversion as well as business, Windows 2000 brings robust gaming and multimedia support to the Windows NT platform. The operating system's support for DirectX—a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that enable faster communication between programs and hardware devices—means that Windows 2000 can run many high-performance games just as nimbly as Windows 98. And, like Windows 98, Windows 2000 allows you to divide your display across multiple monitors, giving you virtually unlimited screen space. You can read about the use of multiple displays in Chapter 4, "Customizing the Desktop."
Initially, fewer games might be available for Windows 2000 than for Windows 98, but you can expect to see a steady increase in their numbers. With Windows 2000, the NT platform is at last a place for play as well as work.
