Selecting Paper Size and Source

The next step involves preparing your document for the eventuality of final printing. What size paper or envelope will you use, and what is the paper source? Word 2002 now offers a huge range of paper sizes. The standard basics are there—from letter (traditional 8.5-by-11-inch) to legal (8.5-by-14-inch) to traditional business envelopes. But in addition to the usual paper sizes, Word supports Statement, Executive, Folio, Quarto, and Note sizes. You'll also find German and Japanese paper size choices, as well as many other envelope options.

Choosing a Paper Size

To choose a paper size, begin by choosing File, Page Setup to display the Page Setup dialog box; then click the Paper tab. The options displayed all have to do with the paper size and source you'll use. (See Figure 21-3.) Click the Paper Size down arrow, and choose the size you want from the displayed list.

Selecting the Paper Source

The paper source is where you send Word to get the paper you'll use in printing your documents. If you're working with a printer that has several trays, you can customize the documents you print, for example, printing one page on letterhead in one tray and printing subsequent pages on blank stock.

To choose a new paper source, click the Paper tab of the Page Setup dialog box and simply click the tray you want to use as the source. When you click OK, Word saves your setting and prints your document accordingly.

It seems like an obvious place to stop and check that all your print options are in working order. Because so many of the choices overlap in Print and Page Setup settings, take a moment to check your print options by clicking the Print Options button in the bottom left corner of the Paper tab in the Page Setup dialog box. If you want to use A4 or legal paper sizes, or you plan to use duplex printing, you can select those settings here.
