Depending on the nature of the document you're creating, you might want to convert all the subdocuments back to a single document. This is an easy process. Start with the master document open and display the document in Outline view. Select the first subdocument you want to convert, and then press and hold Shift while clicking subsequent subdocuments.
When you've selected all the subdocuments you want to convert, click Remove Subdocument on the Outlining toolbar. The subdocument icons and boundaries are removed, and the subdocuments become part of the master document—once again, you have a whole document. Save your file by choosing File, Save, or by pressing Ctrl+S.
