SAP is the world's largest inter-enterprise software company, and the world's third-largest independent software supplier overall. Today, more than 13,000 companies in over 100 countries run more than 30,000 installations of SAP software.

Because of the widespread usage of SAP software, Microsoft BizTalk Adapter for SAP was designed to integrate and transfer SAP data into BizTalk Server Business-to-Business models. This adapter includes tools for developers and IT administrators to access SAP R/3 IDoc structure details and convert them to XML for BizTalk Server processing. It also allows bi-directional and transactional support for SAP IDoc messaging.

Specifically, the BizTalk Adapter for SAP R/3 does the following:

• Provides BizTalk and SAP implementers a way to easily integrate IDoc data
• Provides tools that are customizable and straightforward to use
• Adheres to the BizTalk Server Framework 2.0

  Note   BizTalk Adapter for SAP does not support other SAP data transmission technologies, including BAPI calls. Only IDocs are supported.

A typical business example using the BizTalk Adapter for SAP (Adapter for SAP) is shown in the following diagram. This example shows a process in which a purchase order generated by "Company A" is delivered eventually to "Company B".
