Project 13. Create One-of-a-Kind Party Hats

Use this project to make your own party theme or as a fun party project!

Tools: Photoshop Elements Cone Hat template

Materials: Glossy paper

With a little imagination, some scissors, tape, and elastic rubber bands, you can make your own party hats for whatever occasion you want. In this project, you will use the provided template along with fun styles in Photoshop Elements to create your one-of-a-kind party hat. As a variation, you can also use the Cookie Cutter tool to create crowns for the party host or hostess.

Open the template. Open Photoshop Elements 4.0. In the Welcome window, choose Edit and Enhance Photos. Once the program launches, choose File > Open. Navigate to the Project 13 folder and open the P13_tmp.psd file. Save the file with a new name.

Apply a pattern. Select layer 0 in the Layers palette. Expand the Styles and Effects palette. Select Layer Styles and Patterns. Double-click on a pattern to apply it. If you don't like it, use the back button () to take it off.

Get creative! At this point, the sky is the limit. You can add shapes using the Cookie Cutter tool (see Project 7), paint, or even start over with a new color.

Print and cut. Save your file and print to glossy medium-weight paper. Once it's printed, simply cut out the shape and roll into a cone using either tape or staples to join the ends. Punch out holes in the side for your rubber band to hold the hat in place.
