Chapter 4. Overview of Document Management
A document's lifecycle begins with the initial creation of the document by an end user , and is often extended as it is reviewed and approved by others. SharePoint Portal Server provides a unique way of managing the stages of the document's lifecycle. Some of the key features that will be discussed in this chapter are check in and check out, routing approval, and document profiles. In addition, we will discuss folder-level Coordinator procedures that use and manage other key document management features of SharePoint Portal Server.
In Chapter 2, "Features and Capabilities," we learned that SharePoint Portal Server could be used to help users manage the creation, preparation, and publication of documents. As a document matures within the document management lifecycle, SharePoint Portal Server helps the necessary individuals edit or review a document while maintaining the document's integrity. We have not talked in great detail about additional collaboration capabilities. However, after a document version is published, SharePoint Portal Server can be used to enable Authors and Editors to collaborate on a document and update as necessary. All this can be done while the original version of the document can be seen by Readers.
