Registering for the Security+ Exam

This book has you and your certification status in mind. You, the examinee, must reduce the stress levels involved with preparation and scheduling for the exams in order to focus your energy on your goal: getting Security+ certified.

In the United States and Canada, there are two companies that you can register with to take the Security+ certification exam as well as other certification exams: VUE and Prometric. You can register online or call either company. To register with VUE online, visit http://www.vue.com/comptia or call 1-877-551-PLUS (7587). To register with Prometric online, visit http://www.2test.com or call 1-800-909-3926. You can also register with either company and get worldwide registration information directly through CompTIA.

CD-ROM   VUE and Prometric both support different testing centers. Who you register with will depend on where you want to take the test. You are required to register at least 12 hours before you take the test. If you decide to cancel after registering, you must call 12 hours before your scheduled test time to cancel or you will forfeit your money. Your best bet is to pick a target date for taking the exam and then give yourself at least 30 days to study this book. Make sure that you can answer all questions correctly that are included on the testing preparation CD-ROM that accompanies this book. Next, register at least three days ahead of the date and time you wish to sit for the exam. Ask the registration person at VUE or Prometric for the nearest test center location in your area.

Currently, the cost of the Security+ exam is approximately $225.00 US for non-CompTIA members. If you want to receive CompTIA certification exam membership prices and discounts for CompTIA certifications, you will need to become a CompTIA member. The current cost of the Security+ exam for CompTIA members is approximately $175.00 US dollars. Please see the CompTIA Web site for more details regarding membership.

You do not get your money back if you fail the exam. The exam is currently offered in English. If you pass the exam, you are instantly CompTIA Security+ certified. All CompTIA certifications are good for a lifetime. You will not have to recertify. A welcome kit will be sent to you within four to six weeks, depending on shipping and other factors. If you fail the exam, you can reregister, reschedule, and retake the exam at any time. You will have to pay again to retake the exam.

You need to have the following information ready before you register for the exam:

  • Contact information: Your name, company name , mailing address, and e-mail address.

  • The exam name and number you wish to take: In this case, Security+ Exam SY0-01.

  • Your method of payment: Your best bet is to pay with a valid credit card for quick registration and get the testing date and time slot that fits your schedule. Other forms of payment must be received by the registration center before the tests can be scheduled.

Test Site Requirements

It is advised that you arrive at the test site one hour before your exam. Take a little time to get comfortable with the surroundings at the test site, sign in at the registration desk, and take the time to study last-minute charts and details that you feel are your weak points. I suggest you use the Test Tips at the end of each chapter in this book as a final review preparation. Depending on the schedule of exams at the test site, generally , you can take care of the paperwork, find a quiet area to do some last-minute cramming, and then go take the test. If no one is scheduled before you, it might be possible to take the tests before your scheduled time.

You will be asked to provide two forms of identification at the testing site: a valid driver’s license and a credit card are sufficient. One form of identification must be a photo identification. You might be asked for two forms of ID that display your signature. When you are ready to enter the testing room, you will be given one or two blank sheets of paper and a marker or pencil. You cannot take any other books or notes with you. Cell phones are not allowed and you will not be allowed to leave the examination room until you finish the exam. Once you have signed in at the testing center, a testing coordinator will direct you to a computer that will have your test ready to go. You might be required to enter a security ID before you start the test. This ID is normally your social security number. The testing coordinator will inform you of any special procedures for the particular test center.

The CompTIA certification program has been changed recently to produce a more valuable and desired certification. This book is published with up-to-date information in relation to the current Security+ exam.
