7.7 Software Construction ”Build

Roll up your sleeves and get down to what we all like doing. In the construction stage is all the work needed to convert our designs into a customer solution. Essentially, it will consist of developing, testing, documenting, and integrating your components . The previous chapters have covered this in depth.

From our specifications we know what the requirements are, we know the target, and we know how the system is to function from our test plan. Finally, we know how to build the software from our architecture document. Easy! No, not easy.

Unless this is a repeat project you will be breaking new ground, which is unexplored territory. However, patterns, LCOD, and prototypes will reduce the risks.

All things being equal, this part of the project should eventually become one of the short phases. By using our experience, reuse, patterns, and so on, the construction stage should become shorter the more proficient we become.

LCOD has helped us along the way. We build the components, test them, and demonstrate them to the customer as we go along. Why? It helps us get paid, because we can demonstrate that we have met the identified milestones. The customer can see progress, which gives him or her a warm feeling.
