Summary

In this chapter, you learned to perform a number of common system administration tasks using graphical tools. Specifically, you learned the following:

  • How to use the System Monitor tool to list, reprioritize, and kill running processes

  • How to use the Service Configuration tool to change the list of services that are started each time your computer boots, and to start, stop, and restart running services

  • How to use the Network Device Control tool to manage your network interfaces, including selecting between static and dynamic IP configurations

  • How to use the User Manager tool to add or delete users or groups and to edit group memberships

  • How to use the System Logs tool to view the most recent entries in various Linux logs and to identify potential problem entries

  • How to use the User Mount Tool to mount, unmount, and format file systems as they are listed in the /etc/fstab file

Although the primary vehicle for system administration in Linux remains the command line, the graphical tools described in this chapter can be used to perform the more common system administration tasks you're likely to encounter.
