There are a few phone preferences I haven't touched on yet, and they are worth addressing before wrapping up this chapter. Some of these preferences are accessible from the phone's General Preferences screen, which you open via the General Preferences command on the Options menu. Options that you can set in this screen include the following:
Other phone preferences include call forwarding, roaming, and several advanced settings accessible via the Phone Preferences screen. You open this window by selecting the Phone Preferences command on the Options menu of the phone. Of these preferences, it's particularly important to take note of the call forwarding setting. By default, the setting is disabled so that no calls are forwarded. However, you can easily forward calls from your Treo by enabling this option and entering the phone number you want calls forwarded to. Calls are forwarded to this number regardless of whether your Treo or its mobile radio is turned on or off. This setting depends on your wireless carrier and is accessible only when the mobile radio is turned on; the specifics of how it works might vary for your particular service. Tip If you find that the voicemail notification icon on your device is hanging around even after you've listened to your messages, you can clear the icon manually by tapping the Clear Voicemail icon in the Phone Preferences screen. The final screen of phone preferences relates solely to how your device dials phone numbers. I'm referring to the Dial Preferences screen, which is accessed by selecting the Dial Preferences command on the Options menu of the Phone application. If you live in North America and your wireless carrier requires full 10-digit phone numbers when dialing, you might want to select the North American Dialing check box as well as the first check box below it. This setting applies only to seven-digit phone numbers, which are numbers where the area code isn't specified. A related setting involves automatically dialing a +1 in front of the area code, which you can also set in the Dial Preferences screen. Both settings apply only to North American users and only when you're dealing with seven-digit phone numbers or your wireless carrier requires a +1 in front of the area code. Tip Generally speaking, it's a good idea to always enter full 10-digit numbers for all your contacts. I hope this quick tour of the Treo phone preferences has helped give you a more complete picture of what the Treo phone has to offer and, more important, how you can configure it to better suit your needs. |
