ECML (Electric Commerce Modeling Language) –
A universal format for online checkout form data fields. ECML provides a simple set of guidelines that automate the exchange of information between consumers and web-based merchants.
Echo –
A command in a software program that sends data to another computer which “echoes” it back to the user’s screen display, allowing the user to visually check if the other computer received the data accurately.
E-Business –
The electronic exchange of information including e-commerce.
E-Commerce –
Buying and/or selling electronically over a telecommunications system. In doing so every facet of the business process is transformed: Pre-sales, updating the catalog and prices, billing and payment processing, supplier and inventory management, and shipment. By using e-commerce a business is able to rapidly process orders, produce and deliver a product/service at a competitive price and at the same time minimize costs.
EDI –
See Electronic Data Interchange.
EIDE (Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics) –
A hard drive that allows fast transfers and large storage capacities. The computer’s system RAM is used for storing the drive’s firmware (software or BIOS). When the drive powers up, it reads the firmware.
EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans) –
A Java API developed by Sun Microsystems that defines a component architecture for multi-tier client/server systems. See also Java.
Electronic Commerce Modeling Language (ECML) –
Technology that provides a set of hierarchical payment oriented data structures that enable automated software, including electronic wallets (e-wallets) from multiple vendors, to supply needed data in a uniform manner.
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) –
A series of standards that provide computer-to-computer exchange of business documents between different companies’ computers over the Internet (and phone lines). EDI allows for the transmission of purchase orders, shipping documents, invoices, invoice payments, etc. between a web-based business and its trading partners. EDI standards are supported by virtually every computer and packet-switched data communications company.
E-mail Management System (EMS) –
Intelligent automatic customer e-mail management software used to automate the management and dispatch of emails. An email management system, for example, can send an acknowledgement of a received email automatically, automatically route an email to a specific mailbox or mailboxes, provide ways to improve email interactions with customers, etc.
Encryption –
A system of using encoding algorithms to construct an overall mechanism for sharing sensitive data. Encryption is commonly used for the translation of data into a secret code.
ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) –
A business management system that integrates all aspects of a business, such as, product planning, manufacturing, purchasing, inventory, sales, and marketing. ERP is generally supported by multi-module application software that helps to manage the system and interact with suppliers, customer service, and shippers, etc.
E-wallet –
The electronic equivalent of a wallet for e-commerce transactions. A digital wallet (e-wallet) can hold digital money that is purchased similar to travelers’ checks or to a prepaid account like an EZPass system, or it can contain credit card information. The wallet may reside in the user’s machine or on the servers of a web payment service. When stored in the client machine, the wallet may use a digital certificate that identifies the authorized card holder.
Extranet –
A term that refers to a private, TCP/IP-based network that allows qualified users from the outside to access an internal network.
