Chapter 34. Expanding and Enhancing NDS: NetWare's eDirectorySOME OF THE MAIN TOPICS IN THIS CHAPTER ARE
Long before Microsoft released its first version of the Active Directory, many other directory service products had been around for many years . These include Banyan's StreetTalk, as well as Novell Directory Services (NDS). After NetWare version 6.x was released, NDS was renamed the eDirectory. One of the benefits of the eDirectory when compared to the Active directory is that the eDirectory has been ported to platforms other than NetWare. Many of the utilities and applications that interact with the eDirectory are also available as products separate from NetWare. This means that you do not have to purchase the entire NetWare package in order to make use of the eDirectory. Much of the eDirectory operates in the same manner as NDS, discussed in the preceding chapter. However, in this chapter you will learn about the new eDirectory and how it can be put to use in your network.
This does not preclude using the Active Directory, because there are tools that can be used to create a network that uses both of these directories. For more information about this subject, see Part XI, "Migration and Integration." And there are many metadirectory products offered by third-party software developers that can let both directories interact. |
