ABOUT THE EDITOR
Carolyn Nilson is a recognized expert in all aspects of training. Corporate training positions have included work as a member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where she was part of the "Advanced Programs, Standards, and Inspections Group" of the Systems Training Center. She implemented and promoted quality standards in training design, delivery, and evaluation throughout AT&T. In addition, she taught the Bell Labs' train-the-trainer course. Dr. Nilson also served as Manager of Simulation Training at Combustion Engineering (CE) for Asea Brown Boveri, where she managed the training operation, including the creation of high-level computer-based simulation training for international clients : Norway, Germany, Canada, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and China. At CE, she was on a corporation-wide training design team using expert system technologies to create an electronic performance support system (EPSS) in learner evaluation. Dr. Nilson held the executive position of Director of Training for a management consulting firm with a broad-based Fortune 500 clientele in the New York City area, where she was responsible for budgets and consultant staff supervision as well as for training analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation on client projects. Corporations she has served include: AT&T, Chemical Bank, Chevron, Nabisco, Martin-Marietta, Dunn & Bradstreet, National Westminster Bank, and others. She has been an adviser to Hungry Minds and The MASIE Center; and a faculty member for Padgett-Thompson seminars throughout the U.S., The Center for the Study of Work Teams in Dallas, TX, and The Egypt-U.S. Presidents' (Mubarak-Clinton) Council's Management Development Initiative in Cairo, Egypt, through Pal-Tech, Inc., Arlington, VA.
She has also been a consultant to government organizations in the areas of training design, delivery, evaluation, and management. These include: The World Bank, U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Education, The National Institute of Education, The U.S. Armed Services Training Institute, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). She has been a speaker at conferences of ASTD, ISPI, and the American Management Association (AMA). Her work has been featured in TRAINING Magazine, Training & Development, (T+D), HR Magazine, Successful Meetings, Entrepreneur, Fortune , and The Pfeiffer Annual. She is the author of numerous training papers, speeches, articles, manuals, and books; her writings are selling worldwide to a diverse customer base. Four of her books appeared in Amazon.com's list of "50 Best-Selling Training Books". She is a Schwartz Business Books 1995 "Celebrity Author" (Milwaukee, WI), and was on the 1996 "This Year's Best Sellers" of Newbridge Book Clubs (Delran, NJ). Her books have also been chosen by Macmillan's Executive Program Book Club, The Training Professionals Book Club, and the Business Week Book Club.
Carolyn Nilson received her doctorate from Rutgers University with a specialty in measurement and evaluation in technical education. She earned an MS degree, cum laude, in Educational Administration/Business Administration and a BA degree in History.
