The goal of this chapter is to present detailed scripts for creating a shopping cart used to order products from an online store.

Background

The requirements of e-commerce are among the main driving forces for middleware technology. Online stores need to access and modify information in databases and create customized Web pages to present information to customers. Product information, including image files to showcase new products, needs to be uploaded to keep the online catalog current. The shopping process usually involves customers viewing multiple Web pages, a process that can be eased by using cookies and/or session information. The shopping cart covered in this chapter will be described using the entity-relationship, process, and storyboard design tools. The scripts use the features of SQL, PHP and MySQL, and ASP/JavaScript and Access that you learned about in earlier chapters.
