Remember the Children

It's not necessary to write a best-selling book to market yourself. My daughter Hallie was not afraid to shout to the world what we had to offer. Children don't have set ideas about what they can and cannot do. They don't give themselves limitations. Imagine what you could do if you were freed from the idea that you can't—or shouldn't—do something because you're too old, too young, too inexperienced, overqualified, or whatever reason you've given yourself.

Remember that every word you say, every action you take is a marketing tool. This means you always have another chance to present yourself in the best possible light. Believe in yourself and believe in your value to others, then the marketing will take care of itself.

To get what you're worth and to be able to know how to market yourself successfully, you have to understand how to negotiate your value— what makes you valuable to other people. In the next chapter, you'll find out how negotiating well can ensure that everybody wins and that every relationship you have is a positive one.
