Summary

As this chapter's quote states, we live in a human world. We sometimes forget that and look to technology—high technology—to solve our problems. As an ISSO, your working world revolves around high technology and people in a global IE. It is important to remember that high technology is a tool, a tool that can be—in fact, is—used for both good and bad purposes. It takes a human to use that tool. A human is the root of your information protection problems—the systemic problem. Never forget that. High technology can help you in protecting information from humans, but it is not THE ANSWER. Solving the human issues related to information protection must be considered an integral part of information protection. Remember also that:

  • Technology is changing rapidly, and will continue to do so in the future.

  • Changes in high technology and massive networks (intranets, the Internet, NIIs, and the GII) are changing the way countries, societies, and people in general communicate and interact, and how they view themselves and others—often leading to conflicts.

  • The three periods of change, according to the Tofflers, are the Agricultural, Industrial, and Information periods.

  • Understanding the periods of change, the reasons for the changes, and their impact on the world and information environments will assist in planning and maintaining a dynamic, effective, and efficient information protection program.

  • The ISSO must understand high technology and its impact on society, the criminal justice system, and the ISSO's company or government agency in order to professionally establish and manage an information protection program.
