Chapter 6
In Chapter 5, we began a discussion about monitoring and troubleshooting Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 using status messages and log files. In this chapter, we'll round out that discussion by looking at some additional tools that can be used to assist SMS administrators as they monitor the performance of their systems and networks. We'll start with a brief review of the Windows NT Performance Monitor utility and the SMS performance objects that are added during SMS setup. Then we'll look at how to use HealthMon and Network Trace to determine the status of site systems and how to configure the Event to Trap Translator to interact with a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management system. Last we will examine the Network Monitor utility and the new control tools included with SMS 2.0.
