Preloading Images

graphics/troubleshooting_icon.jpg

I've heard that preloading images is a recommended practice. Why is this so?

Speed. Preloading means that the browser caches these images, so when you move from page to page, they aren't downloaded again. This speeds up the entire navigation process, yet provides your site visitors with a pleasant visual experience.

Learning More About Web Audio and Video

I'm having a difficult time getting more details about using Web audio and video. Where can I go for more information?

A lot of online resources are available. Be sure to stop by the comprehensive About.Com section on home recording at http://homerecording.about.com. It's filled with excellent tutorials and references.

Controlling Music on Your Page

I would like my music to load immediately with the page or be attached to another event after the page has loaded. Can I do this, and if so, how?

You can do so by tapping into the power of Dreamweaver behaviors. But, you can do so only in IE browsers. Netscape and Mozilla do not support this particular behavior.

To add a sound for immediate loading, do the following:

  1. Open the Tag inspector and click the Behaviors tab.

  2. Click the Plus sign and select Play Sound from the drop-down menu.

  3. The Play Sound dialog box appears. Use the folder icon to browse your computer for the sound file. Highlight it and then click OK.

  4. The sound file will be embedded into the document, along with some JavaScript.

The default event is onLoad , but you can change this by selecting the sound object and then highlighting onLoad in the Behaviors panel. A drop-down menu appears, and you can then select from one of the many event options.
