Using Webmin


Webmin is a powerful tool that handles every aspect of system administration. And if it doesn't do something you need it to do, you can create (or download) an add-on module to expand its capabilities.

To cover all of Webmin's features would take an entire book, so we'll take a quick look at how Webmin can simplify a couple of tasks from the previous section. (For more on installing and securing Webmin, see Appendix F, "Installing Webmin.")

To add a new group

Adding groups is easy if you have a nice graphical interface.

1.

Bring up Webmin in your favorite Web browser and log in.

2.

Click the System icon in the toolbar at the top of the page. This displays the System tools page (Figure 3.18).

Click the Users and Groups icon to display the Users and Groups page (Figure 3.19).

4.

Scroll down to the Local Groups table (below the Local Users table) and click the "Create a new group" link to display the Create Group page (Figure 3.20).

5.

Enter the details for your new group, then click the Create button.

Webmin creates the new group and returns you to the Users and Groups page.

To add a new user

Being able to add users by going to your Web browser makes this process much less painful.

1.

Bring up Webmin in your favorite Web browser and log in.

2.

Click the System icon in the toolbar at the top of the page. This displays the System tools page (Figure 3.18).

3.

Click the Users and Groups icon to display the Users and Groups page (Figure 3.19).

4.

Click the "Create a new user" link to display the Create User page (Figure 3.21).

5.

Enter the details for your new user, then click the Create button.

Webmin creates the new user and returns you to the Users and Groups page.
