How Instant Messaging Works

The Internet version of America Online's Instant Messenger (AIM), one of the most popular instant messaging systems, runs as a piece of client software on your computer. To use it, you must be connected to the Internet. When you run the software, it opens up a TCP connection to an Instant Messenger login server. The software sends your screen name and password over the connection to log you in to the server.
