How Internet Workplace Surveillance Works

One of the most common ways that companies track employee Internet behavior is through the use of packet sniffers. Packet sniffers are software that examines or "sniffs" every packet of data traveling across the network and stores it to a log file. An unfiltered sniffer captures every packet to the log, while a filtered sniffer only captures specified packetsfor example, only packets that have passed into the network from the Web from specified websites.
