Section 72. About Transparency Flattening Preview

72. About Transparency Flattening Preview

Transparency flattening is a process wherein Acrobat cuts apart partially transparent, overlapping objects to form discreet nonoverlapping objects. This flattening occurs whenever you print a document that contains such objects or save it to a format other than Adobe PDF 1.4 or higher (Acrobat 5.0 or later).

KEY TERM

Transparency flattening A process of analyzing partially transparent, overlapping objects and converting them into individual nonoverlapping objects that have the same appearance as the previously overlapping objects.

To preview transparency flattening, with your PDF document open , select Tools, Print Production, Transparency Flattening . This displays the Flattener Preview dialog box. Within the dialog box are three sections: section 1, section 2, and section 3.

Preview Settings allows you to select different highlight types. Not all options are available for all PDF documents. Availability of highlight options is determined by the content of the object or image and the flattening settings predefined under the Transparency Flattening panel in the Advanced Print Setup dialog box. To access the Advanced Print Setup dialog box, from the File menu, select Print , and then click the Advanced button. At any time, you can click the Refresh button to refresh the preview of the PDF and any changes you have made to the preview settings.

Select the following options in the Flattener Settings section of the Flattener Preview dialog box:

  • Raster/Vector Balance Drag the slider or enter the degree of rasterization to be applied to the document.

  • Line Art and Text Resolution Set the resolution to rasterize all objects in the document, from 72 to 2400 pixels per inch (ppi).

    TIP

You are not limited to a maximum resolution of 2400ppi in the Flattener Preview dialog box. You can enter resolution values of up to 9600ppi by typing them under Line Art and Text Resolution and Gradient and Mesh Resolution

  • Gradient and Mesh Resolution Choose a resolution from 72ppi to 2400ppi for gradients and meshes that have been rasterized due to transparency flattening.

  • Convert All Text to Outlines Ensures that the width of all artwork text remains consistent, but it can cause small fonts to appear noticeably thicker.

  • Convert All Strokes to Outlines Ensures that the widths of all the lines in the artwork remain consistent, but it can cause thin lines to appear noticeably thicker.

  • Clip Complex Regions Reduces artifacts that result when vector and raster artwork overlap.

  • Preserve Overprint Blends the color of transparent objects with the background color to create an overprint effect.

  • Apply to PDF There are three options to select from when applying transparency flattening to the PDF. Select from All Pages in a Document, Current Page , or a specific Page Range . Click Apply when done. When the transparency flattening process is done, it cannot be undone.

TIP

You can enlarge the preview of the document by clicking in the preview area. You can reposition the document within the document area by holding down the spacebar while dragging the mouse. After doing either of these actions, you can return to the original settings by clicking the Refresh button.
