See Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
A set of protocols used to access directories that’s based on a simplified version of the X.500 standard. Unlike X.500, LDAP provides support for TCP/IP, a requirement for Internet communication. LDAP makes it possible for a client to request directory information like email addresses and public keys from any server. In addition, since LDAP is an open protocol, application developers need not worry about the type of server used to host the directory.
