Connecting to a Windows Computer

When you connect a new USB or FireWire device to a computer for the first time, Windows displays a Found New Hardware message in a bubble near the lower right corner of the screen, and automatically installs the device. If Windows has never seen this device before, it asks for a pointer to the device driver software.

If you have the software CD supplied with the new device, place it in the computer's drive. If you don't have the software, look for a downloadable version on the manufacturer's Web site. Either way, use the Browse button to point Windows to the device driver software. Windows installs the device driver and loads any related control programs from the CD or download.

That's all there is to it. Your new USB or FireWire thing is ready to use.

After the first installation, Windows treats the device just like any other peripheral. If it's connected when you turn on the computer, its device driver loads along with everything else. If you plug in the cable or turn on the device's power switch after Windows is already running, Windows recognizes the device immediately.
