IDSN (Integrated Services Digital Network) –
A set of communications standards that enable a single copper wire or optical fibre to carry voice, digital network services and video.
Image Map or Imagemap –
Clickable images. The image is a normal web image (usually in GIF or JPEG format). The map data set is a description of the mapped regions within the image. The host entry is HTML code that positions the image within the web page and designates the image as having map functionality.
Infrastructure –
The interconnecting hardware and software that supports the flow and processing of information.
Input/Output (I/O) Unit –
Any operation, program, or device that transfers data to or from a computer, such as disks (floppy, hard, or writable CD-ROMs, etc.). I/O units can also consist of single function operations such as Input-only devices such as keyboards and mouses and output-only devices such as printers.
Intranet –
An internal TCP/IP-based network behind a firewall that allows only users within a specific enterprise to access it.
Internet –
A public global network of computers that exchange data.
Internet Backbone –
The worldwide structure of cables, routers and gateways that form a super-fast network. It is provided by number of ISPs that use high-speed connections (T-3s, Ocs) linked at specific interconnection points (national access points).
Internet Address –
A registered IP address assigned by the InterNIC Registration Service.
IP Address –
A unique identification consisting of a series of four numbers between 0 and 255, with each number separated by a period, for a computer or network device on a TCP/IP network.
