With a sub-tropical climate and ample rainfall, Guangzhou is suitable for year-round farming. Agriculture, livestock breeding and sideline production are well developed and grain, oil- bearing crops and a rich variety of vegetables and fruits are grown. Guangzhou is also known as a 'City of Flowers'. At present there are 52 varieties of mineral deposits, including coal, lead, zinc, niobium, gold and other ferrous, non-ferrous, rare, and precious metals, at 396 locations. There are also raw materials for the chemical industry and building materials. There are several thousand plant species and about 210 kinds of wild animals. Guangzhou's water area covers 74,400 hectares, accounting for 10 per cent of Guangzhou's total area.
