Situated in the Pearl River Delta near the South China Sea and adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province. Surrounding hills, tableland and plains range from north to south and there are mountains nearby. Guangzhou is 182 kilometres from Hong Kong, and is China's largest and most prosperous southern city, an important seaport for foreign trade and a famous historical and cultural city over 2,000 years old. It hosts annual spring and autumn export trade fairs. The total area is 7,434 square kilometres and the population is 7.13 million. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.41.1.
