Foreign trade


The total value of Henan's foreign trade in 2000 was US$2.274 billion, up by 29.9 per cent over US$1.752 billion in 1999. Export accounted for 65.7 per cent of the province 's trade flow, with total export value standing at US$1.493 billion. This was a rise of 32.1 per cent over US$1.130 billion in 1999, and equivalent to 2.4 per cent of the provincial GDP (about US$512.6 billion) and 0.6 per cent of the country's total export value (see Table 7.16.2).

Although Henan is largely an agricultural province, exports of manufactured products generated 85.3 per cent of the province's export earnings, totalling US$ 1.274 billion. Export of primary products took a much smaller share of US$220 million, or 14.7 per cent of the total export value.

Among the top five export markets (see Table 7.16.2), the USA imported the most: 20.34 per cent of the province's export. The European Union as a whole ranked second, followed by Japan, Hong Kong and ASEAN countries . South Korea, although not appearing in the top five, had a significant share of 7.54 per cent of the province's export.

Import value totalled US$781 million, an increase of 25.7 per cent over US$545 million in 1999. Import value of primary products came to US$251 million, accounting for 32.1 per cent of total import value, while the import value of manufactured products was US$531 million, 67.9 per cent of total import value.

The province's imports originated from 65 places, but the top five markets (see Table 7.16.3) supplied over 75 per cent of all imports. The USA exported the most to the province: 24.23 per cent of the total.
