Anhui is situated in the lower middle reaches of the Yangtze and Huaihe Rivers. In the southern part of the province is the famous Mount Huangshan, while the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers cut across central Anhui, dividing it into three zones: Huibei (north of the Huaihe River ), Jianghuai (between the Yangtze and Huaihe) and Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze). Huibei is a vast plain, Jianghuai consists mostly of rolling hills, and Jiangnan is mountainous. The total area of the province is 139,427 square kilometres and it has a population of 63.28 million. The provincial capital is Hefei. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.12.1.
