The Shanghai area is known for its rich water resources, with many rivers and lakes. Most of the rivers are tributaries of the Huangpu River. Originating from the Taihu Lake, this 113-kilometre-long ice-free river winds through the downtown area of the city. It is about 300 to 770 metres wide with an average width of 360 metres and is the main waterway in the Shanghai area. There is
a copper mine in Zhangyan and attempts have been made to discover oil and gas reserves along the offshore areas of Shanghai, with some success. Pinhu Oilfield in the south-east of Shanghai has begun to turn out crude oil and gas, which are mainly supplied to the Shanghai area.
