Your BlackBerry device ships with several handy web addresses that are bookmarked and ready for you to visit when you first run the web browser. These bookmarks provide the quickest option for browsing the Web from your device because you just click to visit the sites they represent. In addition to using the standard bookmarks, you can create bookmarks of your own to identify your personal favorite sites for quick visiting in the future. You also have the flexibility to create folders for bookmarks and then use the folders to organize your bookmarks so you can more easily access them.

49. Create and Manage Bookmarks

1.
Open the BlackBerry Web Browser

Scroll to the Browser icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Bookmarks screen appears and displays a list of websites you can visit using the BlackBerry web browser.

TIP

The Convenience key on your device also serves as a shortcut to the Bookmarks screen. The Convenience key is the large key on the top of the keyboard between the Send and End keys.

2.
Navigate to a Web Page

To navigate to a specific web page using a URL you type, click the trackwheel and scroll to select Go To from the menu that appears. Click the trackwheel; a dialog box appears and prompts you to enter the URL. Enter the URL, scroll the trackwheel to select the OK button in the dialog box, and click. The browser opens the website referenced by the specified URL.

TIP

To make entering a URL easier, hold down the Next key for a moment to switch into multitap mode; SureType can make URLs more difficult to enter. To enter a dot (.) in a URL, press the Space key. Forward slashes often appear in URLs, and you can quickly enter one by pressing the Shift key followed by the Space key.

3.
Create a Bookmark for the Page

To create a bookmark for the page you are currently viewing, click the trackwheel and select Add Bookmark from the menu that appears. Click again, and the Add Bookmark dialog box appears. This dialog box allows you to set the name of the bookmark along with the folder in which it is stored. You can count on two folders being available for storing bookmarks: WAP Bookmarks and BlackBerry Bookmarks . The WAP Bookmarks folder is intended to store websites that are accessed using WAP ; the BlackBerry Bookmarks folder is intended to store HTTP websites. Other bookmark folders in addition to these might be provided by your wireless service provider.

The last setting in the Add Bookmark dialog box is the Available Offline option, which determines whether the bookmark's content should be made available for offline viewing. This option is useful if you want to be able to view a web page even if you don't have wireless coverage. If you choose to make a bookmarked page available offline, the content on the page is kept current from when you last viewed the page in the browser.

TIP

If you've previously copied a web page address, the Add Bookmark dialog box includes a Paste button that allows you to create a bookmark based on the address. You can copy any bookmark by selecting the bookmark, clicking, and then selecting Copy Bookmark from the menu that appears.

To finish creating the new bookmark, click the Add button in the Add Bookmark dialog box. You return to the browser, where the page is still in view.

4.
View Existing Bookmarks

At any time, you can view all the bookmarks on your device by clicking the trackwheel in the browser, selecting Bookmarks , and then clicking again. The Bookmarks screen is displayed and shows a list of bookmarks and folders used to store bookmarks. Depending on your specific wireless service provider and device configuration, you might have several bookmark folders. For example, most T-Mobile devices include folders named T-Zones Links and Web Links in addition to the standard WAP Bookmarks and BlackBerry Bookmarks folders.

NOTE

It's worth pointing out that you typically aren't allowed to delete bookmarks that are preinstalled on your device. This is admittedly somewhat of a strange limitation, but it's one you'll have to live with.

Bookmark folders help you organize bookmarks and navigate through them more easily. You can expand and collapse folders by double-clicking them with the trackwheel. You can visit any bookmarked site by opening a bookmark folder and selecting the desired bookmark. Double-click the bookmark to open it in the browser.

5.
Create a New Bookmark Folder

Although the standard bookmark folders are useful, you will likely want to create your own bookmark folders. You can only create subfolders within the standard WAP Bookmarks and BlackBerry Bookmarks folders. To create a subfolder, scroll the trackwheel to select the desired parent folder and click. Select Add Subfolder from the menu that appears, and click again. A dialog box appears that prompts you to enter the subfolder name.

TIP

If you create a lot of bookmarks and want to organize them hierarchically, you can nest subfolders within each other. Just select a subfolder as the parent when creating a new subfolder. The hierarchical directory of bookmark folders is logically similar to the directory of file folders on your desktop PC hard drive.

You can name a bookmark subfolder just about anything you want, but be sure it accurately describes a collection of bookmarks. After entering the name of the bookmark subfolder, click the OK button to accept it and create the folder.

If you change your mind about a bookmark folder after you've created it, you can easily rename or delete the folder. Scroll the trackwheel to select the folder, and then click. Select Delete Folder to delete the folder or Rename Folder to rename the folder; then click again.

6.
Move a Bookmark

As you create bookmark folders and take more control over the organization of your bookmarks, you might want to move the bookmarks around a bit. Moving a bookmark can mean either changing its position within a folder or moving it to a different folder entirely. To move a bookmark, scroll the trackwheel to select the bookmark and click. Select Move Bookmark from the menu that appears and click again. The bookmark now has a box around it; you can move the boxed bookmark by scrolling the trackwheel. Notice that you can easily drag the bookmark to a different folder. When you finish moving the bookmark, click the trackwheel to accept the new location. If you change your mind about the new position before clicking the trackwheel, cancel the move by pressing the Escape button.

7.
Edit and Delete a Bookmark

In some instances, you might want to edit a bookmark, such as when the URL for a bookmark changes. To edit a bookmark, scroll the trackwheel to select the bookmark and click. Select Edit Bookmark from the menu that appears, and click again. A dialog box appears that enables you to edit the address (URL) and name of the bookmark. After modifying the address or name for the bookmark, click either the Accept button to accept the changes or the Cancel button to cancel. You can also copy the address of the bookmark by clicking the Copy Address button. A copied bookmark address can be used to create a new bookmark. More specifically , when you add a new bookmark, you'll see a Paste button that enables you to paste in the address of a copied bookmark (refer to step 3).

In some cases, editing a bookmark might not be enough to salvage it, in which case you might opt to simply delete the bookmark altogether. To delete a bookmark, scroll to select the bookmark and click the trackwheel. Select Delete Bookmark from the menu that appears, and click once more. Click Delete to confirm the deletion; the bookmark is deleted and removed from the bookmark list.

NOTE

If Delete Bookmark doesn't appear on the menu when you click a bookmark, it means that the bookmark is a default bookmark and cannot be deleted. Unfortunately, your device comes with several of these permanent bookmarks preinstalled.
