When you first set up the BlackBerry Web Client, you were given a handheld email account that is associated with your device. When someone sends a message to your handheld email address, the message is immediately delivered to your device as well as to the BlackBerry Web Client. Although you can
certainly
use this email account exclusively, in all
likelihood
you have at least one other existing email account that you already use. It's probably safe to say you'd like to be able to
incorporate
this account(s) into your mobile email experience. Fortunately, adding an existing email account to the BlackBerry Web Client so that your existing email is forwarded to your device is easy.
31. Add Another Email Account to the Web Client
It's worth pointing out that you probably don't need to add an account to the BlackBerry Web Client if you are using a corporate email account with the BlackBerry Exchange Server. In fact, you might not need the BlackBerry Web Client at all if you're using the BlackBerry Exchange Server. However, if you have a POP or IMAP email account (typically through an ISP), you'll find the multiple account feature of the BlackBerry Web Client to be incredibly useful.
NOTE
The BlackBerry Web Client doesn't provide true email synchronization; when you delete a message from your device or through the BlackBerry Web Client, it isn't automatically deleted from your desktop email client. True email synchronization requires the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Ask your network administrator if you aren't sure whether you're using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. If your email is through a provider such as Earthlink, Hotmail, or Comcast, you probably are not using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and therefore must use the BlackBerry Web Client to integrate multiple email accounts.

The
Email Accounts
page shows all the email accounts currently associated with the BlackBerry Web Client. Initially, the only account shown is your handheld email account. To add a new account, click the
Add Account
button. Keep in mind that you aren't creating a new handheld account; you're simply associating an existing email account with the BlackBerry Web Client so that messages sent to that account are also sent to the Web Client.
After clicking the
Add Account
button to add a new account, the page changes to allow you to enter account information for the new email account.

Enter the Account Details
Adding an email account to the BlackBerry Web Client involves entering the email address, username, and password for the accountyou actually have to enter the password twice. Click the
Submit
button to add the email account.
If the email account is hosted by an ISP, there's a good chance the BlackBerry Web Client will need some additional information from you. If the BlackBerry Web Client needs additional information, it
presents
you with a page asking how you access the email account. If the Web Client doesn't ask you for any further information, proceed to step 8.

Clarify How You Access the Account
When prompted to specify how you access the email account, simply select one of the three options and click the
Submit
button. You are then presented with one more page asking you for the email server and port number for the account.
TIP
When specifying how you access the email account, be sure you select the option that corresponds with how you actually check email. More
specifically
, if you have an email account with an ISP such as AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, or some other service that provides you with an email account, the first option is likely the best. Although the second option mentions using Microsoft Outlook, it is referring to using Microsoft Outlook with Microsoft Exchange Server, which applies mostly to corporate email accounts.

Enter the Email Server and Port Number for the Account
If you don't know the email server for your account, ask your network administrator; if you use an ISP, contact technical support. You should take a stab at entering just the domain
name
that is used in your email address. For example, my mail server is stalefishlabs.com. Some mail servers also include
mail.
as a prefix to the mail server's name, like this: mail.stalefishlabs.com. You probably don't need to change the port number unless you've been told to do so by a network administrator or tech support.
Notice the options at the bottom of the page. The first option,
Leave messages on mail server
, allows you to specify that email messages are left on your mail server when they are pulled into the BlackBerry Web Client.
This is an important setting to leave enabled; if you disable it, the messages only go to the BlackBerry Web Client and are removed from the mail server before getting to your desktop email client. The second option,
Utilize SSL
, applies only if your email server requires you to use Secure Sockets Layer to access your account, which is
unlikely
unless you are using a corporate email account; ask your network administrator about this option before enabling it.
TIP
Only disable the
Leave messages on mail server
option if you don't want messages to be received
anywhere
but the BlackBerry Web Client. Although it might sound as if I'm trying to scare you away from this setting, it can actually be useful. If you plan on being away from your desktop PC for a few days and want to check email exclusively on your BlackBerry device, you might want to disable the option. This results in messages being deleted from the mail server when you delete them on your device or on the BlackBerry Web Client. More importantly, disabling this option
prevents
the messages from also going to your desktop PC, which keeps you from having to sift through the same messages on your PC when you get back from your trip.
