It might sound strange at first, but you might not want everyone to see the handheld email address that was provided to you when you first created your BlackBerry Web Client account. I'm not talking so much about a security issue as I am a consistency issue. You might want to present a consistent email address to the people with whom you communicate via email, regardless of whether you're sitting in front of your desk or rounding the turn on the back nine of your local golf course. In the latter example, you might not want clients to know you're on the golf course when replying to their messages. The solution is to alter the sent from email address for your device so that it looks as if the message came from your normal email account. Of course, for this effect to work, you should be sure not to include an auto signature for the BlackBerry Web Client; see 25 Configure Web Client Options .

29. Change the Sent from Email Address

Changing your sent from address doesn't have to be about tricking people into thinking you're at work, however. It serves just as vital a purpose for simply not confusing people. If you set your primary email account so mail is delivered to your handheld (see 31 Add Another Email Account to the Web Client ), there's no reason not to have that same email address shown as the sent from address when you reply to messages from your device. Otherwise, a subsequent reply to one of your handheld messages will only make it to your handheld, in which case you might miss it when you return to your desktop PC. This is one of those issues that has a great deal to do with your own personal work style and how often you move back and forth between your desktop PC and your BlackBerry device for email management.

1.
Log In to the BlackBerry Web Client Site on Your PC

If you aren't already logged in to the BlackBerry Web Client, navigate to the BlackBerry Web Client site using your desktop web browser. Enter your user ID and password in the appropriate fields, and click the Login button to log in.

2.
Navigate to the Profile Page

Click the Profile icon on the top BlackBerry Web Client menu to open the Profile page, which provides access to a variety of options related to your Web Client account profile.

3.
Navigate to the Sent from Address Page

Click the Sent From Address link on the Profile page to access the Sent From Address settings. The Sent From Address page appears and allows you to enter a sent from email address for your account.

4.
Enter the Sent from Email Address

You have some options when it comes to specifying your sent from email address. You can leave the sent from address as your handheld email address, which is the default setting. Alternatively, you can select from a list of additional email accounts to be used as the sent from address. To do this, you must have already added the email account you want to specify as your sent from address to the BlackBerry Web Client; see 31 Add Another Email Account to the Web Client .

The third option for the sent from email address allows you to set the address to any email address of your choosing. Just click the third radio button and type the email address you want to use as the sent from address in the Sent From Address edit field. Keep in mind that the idea behind this address setting is to reveal to message recipients a certain address to which they can send email replies. This can be your desktop email address or even a special mobile email address like I've shown in the example. This setting is somewhat similar to the reply-to address you can set for your main handheld email account.

TIP

If you have access to your main mailbox settings, you might want to create an alias for a mobile email account, such as traveling.yourname@yourdomain.com or mobile.yourname@yourdomain.com. As an example, for me, this alias could be mobile.mmorrison@stalefishlabs.com. You can then set this alias to point to your handheld email account and also set it as the sent from address in the BlackBerry Web Client. The idea with using aliases is to provide a more consistent email address that is easier to remember than the handheld email address you were given by your wireless service provider.

5.
Exit and Save Changes

When you're satisfied with the sent from address setting, click the Submit button to finish and accept the changes. If you change your mind about altering the sent from address, just click the Cancel button to exit without saving the changes.
